“The Process of Differentiation”
At the heart of the Bowen theory lies the concept of differentiation. The concept remains generally the most difficult for both students and more experienced people to grasp and apply. The concept has broad applicability in emotional fields beyond the family. While one can appreciate the concept intellectually, the real detail emerges when one attempts to apply the idea in relationship networks of the family and work systems. Differentiation of self ultimately requires action steps in the context of relationships. Bowen himself once described the effort as, “using the cognitive to control the twitch” that results from our automatic reaction to others. Dr. Papero will focus on the process of differentiation of self and the importance of observing and then changing one’s behavior in the emotional fields we live and work in using didactic presentations, videotapes, and discussion.
